How to Stop Wound Bleeding Properly

How to stop bleeding in a wound
Here's how to stop wound bleeding that you can do at home:

1. Wash hands first
Before stopping bleeding, the first thing you should do is wash your hands. Washing hands can prevent wounds from being infected due to contamination of germs from dirty hands.

2. Apply pressure to the wound area
After washing your hands, the next thing you can do is press the area of the wound with a clean cloth, tissue, or gauze to stop the bleeding. However, avoid pressing the wound too hard.

3. Lift the wound area slightly upwards
If possible, lift the wound area that has bleeding slightly upward, higher than the chest, to slow bleeding.

4. Clean the wound
After pressing the wound to stop bleeding, you can clean the wound area with water and soap to remove the dirt that is still attached. Avoid using antiseptic substances, such as hydrogen peroxide, because they can cause irritation and make injuries worse.

5. Cover the wound with a bandage or gauze
If the wound is in an area that is easily dirty, such as hands, or easily exposed to friction, such as the knee area, cover the wound with a waterproof bandage. Replace the bandages every day and immediately when dirty or wet, to keep the wound clean and dry.

6. Apply antibiotic ointment
Apply a small amount of antibiotic ointment if the wound looks dirty, to prevent infection and speed up the wound healing process. In some people, the use of antibiotic ointments can trigger rashes and allergic reactions. Therefore, always check the doctor before using it.

If your bleeding does not stop even though you have done the above methods, especially if there are signs of infection, such as red, swollen, painful, and suppurating, immediately consult a doctor to get the right treatment.
